Hello summer, hello hot white pants!! The stores are flooding quickly with white jeans in time for summer- whether it be in shorts, pants, skinnies, or capris. Find the kind that’s best for you, and determine what to wear with it below!

If you want a white pair of jeans with lots of stretch, look no further than Joe’s jeggings, destroyed to a classic fit, buy them here. Wear them casually with some wedges. For a regular pair of white jeans, go for the Rock & Republic Stella Straight Leg in Bombshell Fling. They’re sold out at the Rock & Republic site, but they sell them here at Tobi. These will flatter most body types and look universally amazing.

These great cuffed capris would look great with a brown pair of flats or heels and bright top. William Rast sells the Belle here. The low-rise fit makes it a perfect match for any shirt you want to wear with it. Additionally, these are great for all sorts of occasions- you can dress them up or down for anything from barbecues to beach parties to even casual Friday at the office. By changing up your tops and shoes, you can change them per occasion in no time.

Lastly, I live in my Joe’s cuffed denim shorts… and so I can only imagine how much better life would be with these beauties here. You can’t go wrong looking ready for summer in a pair of these! I would pair them with a loose tank personally and probably a pair of cute flats. And now I must return to shopping… uhoh.

The polyphenols in tea may lower your risk for cancer, so use this as an excuse to down a tasty peach treat.

Ingredients:

1 oz tea leaves (Earl Grey or Darjeeling, about 1/3 cup loose tea or 7 bags)

        1 sliced lemon

1 piece ginger (about 2 inches), peeled and smashed

        1 quart water

        8 cups ice cubes

        2 peaches

        1/2 cup sugar

        8 sprigs mint

        1 sliced peach

Boil one quart of water, then add tea, lemon, and ginger to it and steep for 7.5 minutes. Then peel, dice, and place the sugar and peaches into a blender until smooth. Add this to the tea mixture and serve it over ice. Garnish with mint springs and slices of peaches.

It is so hard to put your kids into someone else’s hands. So much so, that you often put it off and put off researching an appropriate daycare too. I cannot stress how important it is to do your research though. Just because a building is labeled a “daycare” does not mean it’s an appropriate place for your child. You need to find the perfect fit for you as a parent and your child as an individual.

First of all, the facility should be licensed by the state and accredited. If you are not sending your child to something with this kind of structure, do not anticipate educational structure in return. If they are certified, then they are reputable and have some sort of curriculum other than kids running around.

Check with the Better Business Bureau or social services department to make sure there isn’t a laundry list of complaints about the facility, and you might want to check if the staff goes through criminal background checks. It is important to leave your children in trustworthy hands, and not in the hands of random strangers.

Then, go check out the facility. Never pick a daycare without seeing children at play at first! Make sure the children are supervised 100% of the time. How is the upkeep of the facility? Are the toys age-appropriate, are things clean, are things safe? Is there enough help and does the help seem interested in caring for children? If there are not fire-escape plans or CPR certified professionals, I would also recommend looking elsewhere. The staff should keep emergency contact information on file at all times. Does any of the staff have training in early childhood care? Do they discipline children appropriately or in a way with which you agree? Do the kids seem happy?

Daycare shopping isn’t a mission that can be accomplished in one day! Take your time and don’t rush the search- make sure you find something that you are comfortable with and that your child enjoys.

I have two favorite TV shows. That’s right, just two “favorites”. I did a lot of weeding out of shows I like and paired it down to two- It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Arrested Development. The reasons for this are below.

Arrested Development:

While you did not last long on the air, I have reached acceptance with the fact that I may have been one of five people who watched your show. Actually, I know there were more because we had a “Save the Bluths” event at my college. I attended this event, with many others, and got to see George Michael, Maeby, AND Steve Holt— IN PERSON. Yeah, Steve is a UT fan, and thus, we cannot be friends in life, but this event was amazing. I had high hopes that the show would continue. The show is quick, witty, and with smart writing. There are jokes you don’t even notice until you’ve seen it seven separate times, and believe me, I have watched all of the episodes seven times minimum. I can pop in the DVDs at any time and start over again, and the show is just as funny. The humor is just not to be outdone, the characters are entirely ridiculous, and GOB will always be GOB and the mother will always be drunk (and awful). I love this show to pieces, and I recommend everyone renting the DVDs to watch it. However, with that said, it is a show you have to watch from the beginning. The characters develop over time, and their behaviors are engrained from the beginning- they don’t really “grow”, but the show is just not as enjoyable if you don’t know the past. Keep your patience when you start, and once you get into it you’ll love it just as much as I do.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia:

I think these people are my friends. “The Gang”, Charlie, Mac, Dennis, Sweet Dee, and Frank, participate in all sorts of adventures. The show is very Seinfeld-esque in that there is not really a plot and there is a group of friends with only one girl. The show is quotable, and I am pretty sure the characters have no morals whatsoever. They do terrible things like abuse the welfare system, hunt people, hold a dance marathon, and throw rocks at trains on Christmas. They are constantly drunk, mostly crude, and they own a bar. You can watch the show at any point at any time, and the show is still funny. They even made a musical and the D.E.N.N.I.S. method for finding (and leaving) women. The characters in the show actually write the episodes, and they just wrapped up season five recently (+10 for still being on the air!). Please watch and laugh at their despicable behavior on FX. I will be your friend if you like this show.

I will never forget browsing Target’s aisles for paper towels when it hit- the tantrum of all tantrums. My daughter, who was sitting in the cart 30 minutes pre-nap time, decided Target was an appropriate place for a meltdown! While resistance can be a healthy way of your daughter showing you she can assert herself, this embarrassing behavior has got to stop in public before you have a meltdown! Here are some small starts to minimize tantrums.

The Car Seat Battle

Definitely worth a disagreement. Buckling is the best route when it comes to safety!

Make it a race to see which child gets in the fastest, use distracting play, or quite frankly- bribe them. Using a bite of candy might have to be the way the trick goes.

Hugging and Kissing When Expected

Don’t force your child- he could end up making a sccene that is totally unnecessary.

Prep your child by saying that the person would love a hug when he/she arrives. Watch and hope the child follows suit. You have to practice what you preach!

Teeth Brushing

Praise the heck out of them when they brush. Blame the need to brush their teeth on the dentist!

Don’t leave it a yes/no question- say, “It’s time to brush your teeth- which color toothbrush do you want?”

Vegetables

I for one, never ate vegetables. I grew out of it… kinda. There was really no wiggle room to argue with me about eating disgusting vegetables, and I can assure you that yelling at your child will not make her want to eat them. Encourage a taste test, and serve things like raw carrots, broccoli, or edamame with yogurt. Pack on the fruits.

When in doubt, throw in a multivitamin.

Sleep Time

Prepare your child to sleep, and have a set bedtime. 15 minutes before bedtime, warn them that bedtime is approaching. Preparing them mentally so that they know bedtime is coming, and by the time the fifteen minutes are up they will have gotten used to the idea.

Make bedtime a routine. The more kids know what to expect, the more they won’t fight it!

I’ll be very honest with you- when it comes to wine, I honestly have very little knowledge about wine brands. I like red (woo antioxidants= great excuse for drinking it), Pinot Grigio, and I like it cheap. I wish there was a mathematic proof to show me how to pick wine, but alas it does not exist. However, here is my foolproof guide to the cheater’s way I pick out wine… I have yet to pick a bad bottle!
1. Determine your price range. Do you feel like splurging today? Is it a party? Is this a gift for someone? Asking yourself some simple questions before you walk in and get overwhelmed is always a good choice. Set some boundaries for yourself. Like really, you don’t need a $40.00 on a random Tuesday. Trust me, you don’t.
2. Determine what color and type you want- white or red? Dry or sweet? What are you pairing it with? Reds go with red meat, whites go with fish and chicken, and if you’re like me you often ignore this factor because reds are just better.
3. Find Your Red Wine Type: a light red wine is Beaujolais Nouveau, a popular French wine, that will go with any kind of meal. A medium body red wine has more tannins- Merlot, Shiraz, and Chianti all fall into this category. A full-bodied red wine is a Bordeaux or a Cabernet Sauvignon. The more tannins, the fuller the body, and the stronger in alcohol content.
4. Or Your White Wine Type: Rieslings tend to be sweet and refreshing, Moscato is a dessert wine, Chardonnay is dry, and Sauvignon Blanc goes with all vegetables, Thai and Italian food, and is light to medium. My personal favorite, Pinot Grigio, is light, crisp, and has smooth overtones. Delicious.
After these questions, research wine sales online. This tactic is a fabulous way to find wine without crashing your budget. Often liquor stores do 2-4-1 specials and even my local grocery store too. Once you find a deal that sounds good, head out and test it out! I often find myself browsing staff picks and points at grocery stores to help as well. If you download the Cor.kz application for your iPhone, you can SCAN barcodes to determine more information about the wine bottle! This is really fun to play with, and I highly recommend it for someone like me who does not know much about brands.

For every social network, there is an appropriate type of photo. Facebook should be a good photo, but it can be a little more fun or one with a pet. However, LinkedIn should be picked with CARE. Read my quick guide to picking out the best photo of you!

  Facebook

If you’re desperate for new friends, while I do not recommend this personally, it has actually been proven that flirting toward the camera is more effective than just smiling for girls. Flirting away from the camera is a serious turn-off, whether you’re a guy or girl.

Make sure to be looking at the camera.

I truly don’t recommend you take the photo of yourself. Note, however, that “MySpace” photos actually work. I happen to think they’re lame, but if you want a lot of friends, apparently it grabs people.

Try to stay away from shots… of you taking shots. While this is less professional than LinkedIn, it’s not that hard to hack into your Facebook or at least seen your main photo. First impressions are important, and when you apply to jobs this might just be your first impression- so be careful!

Make sure you look cute but natural. If someone meets you in person and has no idea that they already friended you the day before, that’s a bad sign. Make sure to look yourself.

        LinkedIn

Keep in mind that this is a PROFESSIONAL social network. These photos are not to be of you drunk and stumbling.

Pick the best photo of you that was ever taken sans cups, alcohol, etc. It is incredibly important to pick this photo wisely.

Make sure you are completely alone in this photo and that it is taken by someone else.

If you have any professional photos, use these.

After my many incidents this week… and namely, today, I feel inspired to discuss driving etiquette. Driving etiquette is never discussed, not even in driver’s education classes or defensive driving classes either.

What, you say, is driver’s etiquette? It’s not being a huge jerk on the road. Everyone on the road is there because they are going somewhere, and the ability to acknowledge that is the first step in the right direction. Driving is not racing, and by acting like an idiot and attempting to race around and swerve in and out of lanes you just look like a fool. And when I see you later on in a wreck, I will probably laugh at you.

Merging is a fancy term for “Taking Turns” or sharing. This does not mean that you should cut someone off, try to play chicken, or aggressively try to hit their front end. Just let the person in if it is his turn! There is no reason to dash in front and cut them off- it is not a race. Letting one car in front of you won’t be the end of the world. The polite thing to do is take turns or let people merge when their lane ends. Please try to be nice.

Accidents happen. If you do happen to hit a car- whether it be with your car, person, bike, or what have you- LEAVE A NOTE. Do not be that person who ruins someone’s day. Your karma will be ruined, and really do try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Leave your phone and number. Pay for the damage. Do the right thing!

Running red lights= a bad idea. Try not do this during rush hour. Think of the poor person trying to make a left who is stuck in the intersection (me everyday on the way home from work) and let them make that safe yellow rather than wait for you to fly through the red light.

Be gracious, not rude, and try to remember- no one wins in a race if you get in a wreck!

While being sun-kissed can make you look skinnier, healthier, keep up your vitamin D levels, and give you a natural glow—it can also lead to skin cancer, wrinkles, and brown spots. It is important to find that natural balance between healthy sun and becoming a leathery person.

Wear sunscreen. Seriously, just do it. Use a moisturizer with sunscreen daily. Once you begin this habit, it’s easy to remember. If you think that sounds irritating, buy a makeup with sunscreen in it. If you want to use a moisturizer with sunscreen, use Purpose Dual Treatment Moisturizer. It has an SPF of 15 and does not make you greasy at all. It’s light, gentle, and perfect for sensitive skin (even I can use it!). If you’d prefer a makeup that guards you from the sun, you’re safe with Bare Minerals or, for dry skin, use laura mercier’s tinted moisturizer . It has an SPF of 20, goes on evenly, and does not look like you’re wearing makeup at all. If you are in the sun everyday (even walking to and from work or school), it is also a good idea to use a body moisturizer with some SPF. Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Moisturizing Lotion has an SPF of 30, is loaded with vitamin E, and has no stickiness whatsoever. It is perfect for everyday use.

When it comes to sunscreen for the beach or pool, Neutrogena Dry Touch sunscreen is a great way to go- gives you coverage and has Helioplex® with total UVA protection. The sunscreen is oil-free and entirely grease-free too. This one is ideal for a pool party where you’re hanging out with some new guys.

Another product you can use is the Sunpill. The Sunpill boosts UV defense within your body, and thus is ideal for those who live in warmer climates and are exposed to sun year-round. It does not prevent your body from receiving the beneficial effects of Vitamin D and prevents the aging damage. The natural ingredients are mostly antioxidants that kill free radicals, such as pomegranate, green tea extract, astaxanthin, and beetroot extract. If you take one daily, it will boost your ability to be exposed to the sun without receiving such harmful effects. Try the Sunpill now!

I love barbecues as much as the next person- no definitely more. Summer barbecues are the way to go, but you don’t want to be the person who shows up with nothing. When in doubt, always bring some sort of side dish and aim for something that everyone likes. Remember, summer equals hot, and you don’t want a dish that will wilt or melt in the sun. So, for this weekend’s barbecues, I discussed with my friends what they wanted- and it was cold drinks and chips. I dug a little deeper and discussed with my friends what they might actually want, and I finally got it out of them. Macaroni and cheese, a lot of it, and when I asked whether or not they liked spicy macaroni and cheese they said sure why not! My macaroni and cheese was a seriously huge hit—everyone couldn’t get enough and was excited there were leftovers for the next day’s lunch. The macaroni and cheese recipe is very simple to do, and it is very cheap to make too.

Ingredients:

1 box of DaVinci elbow macaroni

2 eggs

½ can of evaporated milk

1 shredded block of medium cheddar cheese (16 oz)

2 tbsp butter

¼ – ½ cup of diced jalapeno (add as much as you like)

Boil water and cook DaVinci elbow macaroni as directed. While this is cooking, shred the cheese into a bowl. Then drain the elbow macaroni but do not run over it with cold water. Add the macaroni back into the pot, and mix in milk, eggs, butter, and most of the cheese. Leave some aside to top the mix at the end. Blend all ingredients until all the cheese and butter have melted. Mix in jalapeno at the end, then place in baking dish and top with excess cheese. Bake the macaroni and cheese at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Let cool some before serving and hopefully your friends will rave about it just as much.
